  • I acquired this unique collection around 12 years ago when Hasbro's creator of the G.I Joe action figures, Don Levine, sold his personal collection.  (See copy of Toy Shop Article from 11/5/1999)
  • In that collection were other items from the Hasbro Toy company that were non G.I Joe related, including the AMAZE-A-MATICS Prototypes, Blueprints and Extra Car Bodies.
  • The 2 prototypes were hand made by HMS Associates in Willow Grove, PA, the same company that designed many of the Aurora T-Jet Slot Cars.
  • The 2 prototype car bodies are 1-up (same size as the production Amaze-A-Matic cars) entirely hand-carved from acetate plastic. These 100% authentic and original artifacts were created circa 1969 by a sculptor at HMS Associates in Willow Grove Pennsylvania.
  • Many of today’s collectors are aware of the history of HMS due to the wonderful Aurora Slot Car book written by Tom Graham in the early nineties. They were a product development company who would take an abstract concept and bring it to a production ready three-dimensional finished prototype.
  • Although they developed consumer products for many different companies, it is the numerous toy and hobby related businesses HMS worked for and the merchandise they created that makes this such a compelling story.
  • Ideal, MPC, Kohner, Remco, Hasbro, Galoob, and most famously Aurora, among others, were all clients of HMS.
  • Legendary sculptor Bill Lemon, who hand carved the patterns for many of Aurora's best and most famous figure kits, worked for HMS.
  • HMS handled all of the slot car bodies for Aurora from the beginning of the Model Motoring line up to 1970, when Aurora went in-house to design their new A/FX line of cars.
  • The green & red color of the bodies are not paint, it is the color of the acetate through and through. Trim items were hand painted and decals were applied to look realistic.
  • The Prototype Red Vette & Green Mach 1 Mustang were never produced for the Amaze-A-Matics line in their present form. They did produce a Mustang Funny Car and a Sting Ray Special that had very similar body lines.
  • The level of craftsmanship and detail is excellent. Every crease and contour is beautifully hand sculpted. Remember, this was back in the days when they didn't have computer aided design and manufacture.
  • These are NOT test shots or other molded types of body. Everything on it has been hand carved from solid blocks of acetate. You can see the condition of the 2 Prototype bodies from the detailed pics.
  • The Mustang has 3 individual pieces. the body, front and rear bumpers. They fit together and can be glued if the winning bidder desires to do so. the Mako shark body has 3 pieces that fit together. The body, windshield and holder. There is a broken pillar post on the driver's side and the front roof line has a slight bend to it.

Own a piece of 60's Toy History!

I have in my slot car collection the T-Jet AMX 3-up prototype from HMS.
